Abstract

This tutorial is based on the lecture notes for the courses "MachineLearning: Basic Principles" and "Artificial Intelligence", which I have taughtduring fall 2017 and spring 2018 at Aalto university. The aim is to provide anaccessible introduction to some of the main concepts and methods withinsupervised machine learning. Most of the current systems which are con- sideredas (artificially) intelligent are based on some form of supervised machinelearning. After discussing the main building blocks of a formal machinelearning problem, some of the most popular algorithmic design patterns formachine learning methods are presented.
